Nomadic tribes living on this territory wove carpets only for their own use. They were never an article of trade, for in the period when Pakistan was forming, the trade in carpets never led to this land. The endless military conflicts in neighbouring Afghanistan chased from their homes increasingly more families, who strove, once in Pakistan, to support themselves with what they knew - the weaving of excellent carpets. The most beautiful Afghan carpets of the past several years emerged in Pakistan. Now, as we wish the Afghan refugees a happy return home, the weaving of carpets has -thanks to them- already put down firm roots in Pakistan; the quality is satisfying and the prices extremely good. |
