Turkey can thank for its carpets the Kurds and the tribes of the Caucasus. It is their motifs that still form the patterns of such carpets as the Kars, Kazak, Shirwan, or Doshemalti. Later, the sultans invited Persian masters to their court, to teach their art to the local populace, and thus there came to be the sublime carpets that brought Turkey fame throughout Europe. The desire for profit, though, has caused quantity to replace quality. The once-renowned carpets of Smyrna are now largely unknown, the wonderful carpets of Kars slowly vanish, the great Anatolian carpets are now but a memory. It is ever more difficult to find good quality at a corresponding price. |
